Life in the Library-wikis

Wow, this is huge! I am still trying to convince myself to make a website out of one of these. It has been done, but it require some committment on my part. Some of the ones I saw were huge websites and very well done. I know nothing about creating one, but I'm wondering if I could ask the high school computer class to work on this Hmmmm! I'll have to play with that idea for a while in my head before I decide.

Life in the Library

Super cold here the last couple of days. The high yesterday as -3 degrees. Even now, as I'm typing I'm doing it with my gloves on at the library. The furnace has a problem and can't get up to temperature. The fyrnace repairman has been called, but hasn't been here yet. In fact when I first came in it was 47 degrees in here. Now it is a balmy 52.
The with cold and the snow, 10 inches Friday, 2 more Saturday, I was house-bound the last 3 days, no way was I staying home today. I'm nearly ready to kill, yes in a painful manner, my husband of 20 years. So it's time to go to work. No matter what I have to endure when I get there.

Life in the Library 2.0

I really like some of these ideas. I have no training in Library Science. My degree is in Education, but I have always been a library lover/user. My perspective is probably a little different than someone who studied librarianship. I like what Michael Stephens had to say. His ideas are to the point, very commonsense. His wiring is down to earth and easy to understand. I copied and pasted his main ideas here.
1.Harness the library user in both design and implementation of services
2.Library users should be able to craft and modify library provided services
3.Harvest and integrate ideas and products from peripheral fields into library service models
4.Continue to examine and improve services and be willing to replace them at any time with newer and better service. I wish I could have persuaded a couple of board members to take this class. There is still at least one who only reluctantly accepts computers. These ideas would blow her away.

Life in the Library

Checked out Twitter this pm, not sure I understand what all the hu-bub is about. I haven't really done anything there yet.Your URL: http://twitter.com/nelibrarian. Have so many new passwords and user account names, finally had to write them all done. Never had to do that before. Guess I have to give up the two or three I have alternated the last five years.

Supposed to blog about Library Thing. Had good success with the website. It's easy to use and find your way around. Was able to find some of the books I had read . I mainly just read certain authors or types of authors. I'm not real brave about reading someone I've never heard of. The last time I tried that, the book was awful. It had good reviews, but there was no point to it at all.

I'm at plgrlbrry/librarything

Flickr-ing

Had my first experience with Flickr. I must say I could spend a whole day just looking at photos. The site is huge. I think I'd really like to try out FD Flicker Toys and pictobrowser. In fact I think I'll go there right now and do that

Life in the Library

Since I have pretty much done these in all the wrong order and gone about it the wrong way, one would think I don't like technology. I do, however. I have two teenage children, both very smart, but I'm the one who has to do all the computer repair, I'm the one who helps with adding music to MP3 players and copying stuff to a DVD/CD. I don't feel I'm keeping up with it, but I'm working on it. Can't blog very long today, got to much to do.

Life in the Library

I did it. I finally got to IM with Allana. It was scary. Like I said I'm not a brave person. What am I doing in Nebraska? Some of the other "23 Things" look even more intimidating.

Anyway I don't how librarians do this that work full-time. I'm having hard time keeping up and I just work half-time.

Board meeting this afternoon as well, luckily I have the paperwork all ready to go. Have to remember to get a hold of Chris for system board meeting on the 19th.

Life in the Library

Wow, busy today. That is not the norm for a Monday. Our busiest day is usually Wednesday.
The only new movie we have is the Incredible Hulk on DVD. Rated PG-13. We have two new books donated. One by Nora Roberts who is always popular and the other, by an as yet unknown Lesley Kagen. Both sound good. I'll probably be reading both of them very soon. I need another book. Just finished my other one Saturday.

Don't know how I'm doing with my stuff from class. I was unable to IM anyone last week, so will try it again this week. I went on ahead and did things 6,7. I'm continuing to do some blogging as well. I like it.

Life in the Library

Another slow day. Probably because it's rainy outside. Weather has a tremendous influencing factor in our library count.
I did get to go through the back room and clear out all the magazine that will be eligible for discard. There is a lot, but that's normal. Got the library bear decorated for Halloween. We have a very large stuffed bear. We call him a Reading Bear. Though most of the time he's just a hugging bear. I decorate him for different seasons. He gets a different costume every year. He's Dr Seuss now. Got several other things that have to be discarded a couple of books that have bit the dust and some DVD's. We have such a hard time with those DVD's. They just don't last as well as the older VHS movies. Got to go. I think I like this blogging.

Life in the Library

Well, I've done it. Created my Google Talk account. I haven't talked to anyone yet. Seems no one is home. I see that as a big disadvantage to this. But on the plus side, if someone is available you can get an answer to whatever you want to talk about right away. If I were a patron it would be a plus to get an answer to my question right away. I am not sure what purpose it would have for me. Our library is in to small of a town to be open full-time.
I might be able to get a hold of my college son this way. He doesn't like cell phones.

Life in the Library

Seems pretty slow today, been here more than an hour and no people have been in. There aren't any materials to check in, hardly any mail to deal with at all. I'm doing maintenance on the library computers. That always takes a lot of time and Thursdays are usually quiet, good day to do that.
Have some end of the year stuff I need to start on as well, but just don't feel real ambitious today. One of the beauties of being a one-person library I can kind of decide some of that on my own.
Still trying to collect some overdue items. That's a constant struggle. There are honestly some people I hate to see come in and check out stuff. You know it will come back late or damaged if you get it back at all.

Life in the Library

Think I will like blogging, it's a lot like having a diary, but just having it online.
Colder today, made a cup of espresso. Feels pretty good to have something hot to drink. We just very recently got a coffee/espresso machine at the Library.
So much stuff to check in today, feels like I haven't gotten anything else done yet. I need to find out if other libraries are using Microsoft Office 2007. I might be able to get it though Tech Soup Stock, but not sure I want to. Any help out there.

life in the library

Very busy again today. Which is good, the time passes more quickly. Have all the new books checked in and the movies as well. Dusted shelves this pm. One little kid who was just here grabbed about three tooties rolls, quickly unwrapped them and shoved them all in her mouth at one time. Then Dad spotted her, Oops!
Someone came in and wanted to check out a bunch of movies. They were going camping and would be gone for a week. Our movie limit is five, but I let her check out a bunch. One of the pluses of being a small library.
Am anxious to get my computer back. The librarian's computer has been down for more than 3 weeks. Have had to use the OPAC one, it's OK, but I like the other one more. Got to go more people!

Life in the library

Sometimes being a librarian is boring. Today there are people trickling in, but no hordes of people like there are some days. The phone hasn't even rung today.

The one bring spot of the day, I have new books to check in. YEAH! That is one of the best parts of this job, unpacking a box of new books. Sometimes they look a little different than I think they will. Sometimes they are thicker, sometimes it's a paperback, when I didn't notice it before I ordered it.

I did get a little computer maintenance done on computers 1 and 2. That's a constant job, updating, checking for spyware, deleting stuff off that is not supposed to be there at all. Some of the these don't have security on them and I have to really watch that games etc., don't get installed on those. Yes, Iknow we could buy security for them, but there are problems with that too. I don't mind checking to see what has been put on them.

People, I have people. YEAH! Got to go!!!!!
